18/08/2022A hot summer equals fire risk
According to the Italian promoter of correct and sustainable forest management (PEFC), the last seven years have seen the highest temperatures on record (48.8 degrees in Sicily in August 2021). The critical period this year began as early as June, which highlights the fact that extreme heat waves are no longer concentrated solely in July and August, but begin earlier and end later, even as late as October. For this reason, the summer of 2022 is likely to see the highest number of fires, given that the statistics for the month of June already show numbers higher than those of the previous year.
Global warming is the main cause of this emergency. High temperatures, prolonged fires – especially due to drought – are only the consequences of this terrible phenomenon.
How to avoid the ignition and spread of fires
Prevention is the best weapon available to prevent and combat fire.
This serves not only to safeguard the natural area, but also to prevent economic loss. Extinguishing a fire costs eight times more than preventing it.
The first strategy is to cut down sick and dry trees, which in turn promotes the growth of saplings, and clean up the undergrowth in areas most at risk.
Another important factor is the proper disposal of waste near wooded areas, as it could be detrimental to human health and more in the event of fire.
The creation of water points and the optimization of forest roads are essential to combat this state of emergency, to facilitate the intervention of fire brigade personnel in the event of fire.
Get rid of weeds with the right equipment
As previously mentioned, the maintenance of undergrowth is one of the factors that helps to limit fires, especially in wooded areas. So what can be done to clean it properly?
The first step is to dress appropriately in order to best protect yourself: cut-resistant trousers, boots, protective glasses and work gloves are the base items of clothing to be worn when working in uncultivated areas.
The work begins with the use of a brush mower, which allows the drastic clearing of any type of terrain. After more bulky vine shoots and debris have been removed, move on to areas closest to houses. A good electric lawnmower and professional disc brush cutter will be required, which are more suitable for cutting brambles.
