01/09/2022Quads: the alternative to lawn tractors
Quads are useful in various contexts, and serve an important purpose in precision agriculture. They can be used in greenhouses and vineyards, both on sloping terrain and flat terrain pastures.
They can also be used for surveying and in potentially dangerous operations, due to their ability to carry loads and tow measuring devices equipped with sensors. These sensors can be used in vineyards, orchards and arable land, as well as in normal farm operations in agricultural field mapping.
Quad regulations in agriculture
There are two ways to approve a quad for circulation: the first is as a road-based all-terrain vehicle, or to be road approved for agricultural applications.
The latter falls within category T3/B and does not have limits in terms of speed or power, but must still comply with road regulations.
Two people can ride on it, towing a trailer on the road is permitted, and it does not currently require a roadworthiness test.
It is necessary to hold a category B driving licence, unless it classifies as an exceptionally large machine, which would then require category C1.
Agricultural equipment
On some quads it is possible to use agricultural equipment for tractors and small tractors, such as flail mowers as their cutting speed is ideal for shearing grass and small vine shoots. Rotary mowers, on the other hand, are very light and offer good performance; tillers have high versatility, as well as lawnmowers equipped with a side discharge.
