GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE
28/04/2022Having a beautiful lawn all year round is desired by those who like to live in a well-kept and lush outdoor space. However, one of the most frequently asked questions when winter ends and temperatures start to rise is: When should grass be cut after winter?
Knowing when to tackle mowing your lawn for the first time after winter is important to allow it to grow evenly and obtain a lush lawn. Below we will explain when to mow the lawn for the first time and then carry out regular maintenance work.
- Spring arrives: the first mowing operations of the season
After winter, grass should be cut in spring, when conditions are ideal for mowing and the grass is strong enough to withstand it. Here are a few rules to follow when mowing for the first time after winter: wait until the grass has reached a height of 7 cm.
It is advisable not to remove more than 30% of the existing vegetation.
If the lawn has reached 7/8 cm, cut it back to about 5 cm after the first cut.
To ensure that the grass is ready to be mowed, try to check that the roots are firmly in the ground: pull out a clump of grass and if it resists being pulled out then it is time to mow. You need to know that the deeper a root goes, the stronger the plant is and the more ready it is to be mowed. Alternatively, if the grass is easily pulled out, it is better to wait a little longer, even a few days longer is enough to let the grass roots grow deeper and stronger.
To ensure that the grass does not suffer from mowing, it is important to observe a few rules that encourage successful vegetative recovery. It is useful to cut a small part of the lawn, maximum 2-3 cm, so that the grass remains about 5/6 cm high. Following this rule, proceed with mowing the grass for the first 3 times at 4-5 day intervals. This is a practical and excellent solution to avoid damaging the grass, which is still young and tender. In this way, the grass can be strengthened and you can then cut it lower and less frequently.
Another way to mow your lawn in spring without causing any damage is to do it when it is dry. When grass is still young and tender, it is more delicate and tends to be crushed if trampled by the weight of the lawn mower or simply by your feet.
If grass is mowed while still wet, the damage will be even greater and the lawn will be crushed and weakened. Moreover, as the roots are not yet very deep, they do not have the strength to lift the grass. So, it is necessary to wait until the lawn is perfectly dry before you can mow the grass and have beautiful, reinforced lawn as a result.
- Mowing grass after the first sowing operation
After mowing and scarifying for the first time, it is time to reseed it, if necessary. Reseeding is recommended if the grass is very patchy. N.B. Before reseeding, cut the grass by 2-3 cm and then scarify. After reseeding, let the grass rest and water it generously. During weekly mowing operations, take care not to go over the areas of new grass. After 3-4 weeks the reseeding has reached a height of about 8 cm – now it is time to mow. - Grass cutting equipment
For a perfect result when mowing the grass for the first time, use a lawn mower with sharp blades, especially if the grass is tough. Remember that the lawn mower needs to be checked at least once a year to ensure that it is always in good working order: it is a good idea to carry out annual maintenance before the machine is put away for the winter.
It should also be noted that the lawn may need to be aired after initial mowing, especially if some areas are thinning (with little grass) or have heavy thatch. This operation should be carried out using manual, electric or petrol-driven tools, known as spring rakes. It removes thatch and allows the lawn to breathe through small cuts in the ground.
To ensure that your lawn is well-maintained, after initial mowing operations, it should also be treated with granular greening fertilisers with a high nitrogen content.
