HOW THE COURTS AT WIMBLEDON ARE GROOMED

BELLON MIT OPEN DAY – 7 October 2022
13/10/2022Autumn is approaching and, as you know, for gardening enthusiasts this means rolling up your sleeves and preparing your garden for the cold weather that is now on the way so that it always looks, colourful, healthy and lush.
Let’s take a look at the best way to take care of your grass and the steps required.
- Preparing the lawn: the last mowing before winter
This task usually starts in September or early October, when the sun no longer has the strength to warm the ground and there are fewer weeds among the grass.
So, let’s start with the procedure. The first step is to get a rake and a sack and start collecting leaves and twigs that have settled on the ground over time. The second step involves mowing the lawn with a lawn mower to a height of about 2.5-3 cm.
By taking these initial two steps, you will have a better understanding of what your lawn needs and what is required to get through the cold period.
- Autumn lawn, clearing thatch
The third step is the most important one. It involves aerating the lawn at points that we realised – in the previous step – are the weakest and most affected.
In this way, you can remove thatch that has built-up during the summer period, allowing the grass to better absorb nutrients.
A scarifier can be used to do this, thereby simplifying the work and also making it less arduous.
- Weeding, fertilising and sowing
After carrying out the first three steps, our lawn is ready to receive all our attention, so it’s now time to sow grass with the same seeds used for your lawn. Then it’s time to fertilise. We recommend a phosphorus-rich fertiliser to nourish the soil in the best possible way.
The fifth and final step is to fertilise again, but with a different type of fertiliser i.e. one rich in potassium and slow-release nitrogen to stimulate grass growth and improve its appearance when it starts to grow.
